On Monday at 7pm, the Florida State Seminoles and the Stanford Cardinal will face off in a quest to capture the NCAA women’s soccer championship. Both teams have been here before; Monday will mark the eighth appearance in the NCAA championships for both schools; the former has won the College Cup four times, the latter, three.

In order to make it this far, Florida State had to defeat the mighty TCU, who had up until that point battled a particularly difficult schedule of opponents, despite being a two-seed. The Horned Frogs took down the formidable North Carolina Tar Heels in penalty kicks in the third round, and then defeated No. 1 seed Vanderbilt in overtime in the quarterfinals.

So, for Florida State to beat TCU in regulation time in the semifinals was no easy feat. When the two teams faced off on Friday night at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, it took more than 75 minutes for FSU to get on the board. It was a tough and even battle for the majority of the game; FSU outshot TCU, but TCU took more corner kicks. In the 73rd minute, sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson found the back of the net and the Seminoles would manage to hold onto that lead until the end, despite a scary chance from TCU with a mere three seconds to go.

For Florida State, that victory - and this postseason, generally - would not have been possible without Hudson. Friday night’s goal was the 14th for the sophomore this season (a team best). Three of those goals have come in the postseason, and four of them have been game winners. The team will be looking for more heroics from Hudson as they take on Stanford in the championship game.

Another players who is set to make a big difference in Monday night’s finale is junior forward Jordynn Dudley, who was just named an All-American for the third time in her career. Dudley is the fourth player in FSU history to be named an All-American three times, and the first to do it in her first season. The scoring engines for both Hudson and Dudley will need to be turned all the way up as the Seminoles face off against stiff competition.

Two other players who will be crucial to a FSU win on Monday night are sophomore midfielder Taylor Suarez and senior defender Heather Gilchrist. The former has played over 1,100 minutes this season and consistently finds creative ways to move the ball up the field. The latter has played over 1,600 minutes this season and runs a militant back line.

Additionally, goalie Kate Ockene is just a freshman, but you wouldn’t know it by her confident playing style and routine heroic saves. She, alongside her teammates, will have to watch out for Jasmine Aikey of Stanford, who was recently named the TopDrawerSoccer Player of the Year and scored her team’s game winner over Duke in their own Friday night semifinal match.

The championship game will be played on Monday, Dec. 8 at 7pm at CPKC Stadium.
